Picking the right infrared (IR) lamp for a bathroom is basically a balancing act. You don’t want to blow your electricity bill or melt your fixtures by going overboard, but nobody likes stepping out of a shower into a freezing room. The trick is matching the power to the space. Here’s the thing about shortwave IR: it doesn’t actually warm up the air. It goes straight for the target—meaning you and your skin. Because of that, the height of your ceiling matters more than you’d think. The further the heat has to travel to reach the floor, the more punch you need from the lamp to keep things cozy. For a tiny powder room, you’re usually fine with a single 250W to 400W lamp. It hits you instantly. But if you’re dealing with a larger master bath, you’ll probably need a team of lamps—maybe three or four 600W tubes—to cover the area. But be careful. I’ve seen people try to cram 800W+ tubes into small, tight fixtures with zero airflow. It’s a recipe for disaster. The reflectors warp, the wiring gets brittle, and eventually, things just stop working. You have to make sure the fixture can actually breathe and handle the heat it’s putting out. What’s your goal? If you want that “instant blast of warmth” the second you flip the switch, go for the high-wattage shortwave tubes. If you’re just looking for a steady, gentle warmth that lingers, lower wattage lamps that stay on longer are a better bet. One last thing before you start wiring: check your circuit. A four-lamp 600W setup pulls nearly 2.4kW. That’s a heavy lift. Always use high-temperature wiring so you aren’t worrying about safety. And for heaven’s sake, space the lamps out. If they’re too clustered, you’ll end up with “hot spots” that feel like a heat lamp at a buffet—uncomfortable and uneven. Spread them out, and you’ll get that nice, even glow across the whole room.
