
Getting Your Mirror Heat Just Right
Ever step out of a steaming shower, look at the mirror, and see… absolutely nothing? Just a wall of white fog. It’s annoying. To fix that, we use short-wave infrared lamps to warm up the glass. The trick is getting the temperature just above the dew point so the water can’t settle. But here’s the catch: you can’t just throw any lamp at any mirror and hope for the best.
Finding the Right Power
You have to match the wattage to the size of the glass. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room mirror, a 50W or 100W lamp does the trick. Simple. But try that same little lamp in a massive double-vanity master bath? You’re going to end up with “cold spots”—patches of fog that just won’t budge. For those bigger mirrors, we usually jump up to 250W or even 500W. But don’t go overboard. If you pump too much heat into one spot, the glass expands unevenly. That’s how you get a stress fracture. Nobody wants a cracked mirror. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where the heat is spread evenly across the surface.
The Nitty-Gritty of Installation
We usually go with quartz-halogen elements. Why? Because they heat up almost instantly. You want that mirror clear the second you open the shower door, not five minutes later. Now, a quick heads-up on the wiring. High-wattage lamps pull more current, so make sure your transformer or driver can actually handle the load without getting moody and overheating. And please,use heat-resistant silicone wiring. Regular insulation can melt right near the lamp housing, and that’s a problem you really don’t want to deal with.
Saving Power (and Your Lamps)
Running a heater 24/7 is basically just throwing money away. A better way to do it is to pair the lamps with a humidity sensor or just link them to your light switch. That way, the heat only kicks in when the room is actually steamy. One last thing: give your equipment some room to breathe. If the mirror cavity is too tight, heat builds up, and you’ll burn out the filament way faster than you should. A little ventilation goes a long way in making your gear last.
