If you’ve ever worked with glass jewelry, you know the stress of thermal management. You need to get those internal stresses out without warping the whole piece, but traditional kilns are a total drag. They rely on heating the air, which is slow. It creates this annoying bottleneck where your production just… stops. That’s why we switched to shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of waiting around, you can move the annealing process right into your production line. Your pieces keep moving, and the heat keeps up. Why it actually works Here’s the thing: shortwave IR doesn’t waste time heating up the air around the glass. It dives straight into the material. It’s almost instant. When you pair these lamps with a PID controller, the response time is crazy fast—we’re talking milliseconds. This means as a piece of jewelry slides through the tunnel, you can tweak the temperature on the fly to get it exactly right. Power and the “Real World” Struggle To keep a conveyor moving without losing heat, you need some serious muscle. We use high-wattage quartz lamps because they have the density to handle a continuous flow. If your line is moving fast, the lamp needs to bounce back to full temperature the second the next piece enters the zone. But there’s a catch. All that heat puts a lot of pressure on your reflectors. If you let them get dirty or scuffed, you’re basically throwing 20% to 30% of your energy into the machine frame instead of the glass. Keep them polished. Seriously. The Trade-off Moving to an inline setup is great because it kills the “batch and wait” cycle. Your shop gets more space, and your results stay consistent. But you can’t just set it and forget it. Shortwave IR is intense. If your conveyor slows down too much, you’ll overshoot the temperature and risk thermal shock. It’s a balancing act. You have to find the sweet spot between your lamp wattage, the speed of the belt, and how thick your glass is. Get it wrong, and you’ll either fry the piece or burn out the lamp.
