
Getting Infrared Heating Right for Silk-Screened Glass
Here’s the struggle when you’re tempering glass that’s already been silk-screened: it’s a total balancing act. You need enough heat to make the glass strong, but if you push it too far, you’ll burn the ink or watch your crisp patterns start to blur. That’s why we lean on short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. They give us the kind of control we need to get the heat soak just right without ruining the art. Keeping your patterns sharp The trick is hitting the glass with exactly the right amount of energy. You want to trigger the tempering process, but you can’t let the ink layer overheat. Short-wave IR is great because it dives into the glass quickly. It gets the core temperature up while keeping the surface just below the point where the ink starts to break down. If you crank the wattage too high or let the glass linger under the heaters, the ink bleeds. Just like that, those sharp edges are gone. Strength vs. Clarity To get the strength you need without sacrificing the look, you have to play with the thermal gradient. I usually suggest a zoned heating approach. Instead of blasting everything with the same heat, you adjust the power across different sections of the IR array. This ensures the glass hits that softening point for tempering, but the printed areas stay stable. Speed is your friend here. Short-wave lamps hit the target temperature in seconds. It stops that “slow soak” feeling that usually leads to ink migration. The hidden trap: Cooling High-intensity IR lamps are fantastic for fast cycles, but they put a lot of pressure on your cooling system. This is where a lot of people get tripped up. If your conveyor cooling isn’t powerful enough to rip the heat away the second the glass leaves the tempering zone, the residual heat keeps cooking the ink. You’ll end up with a blurred pattern even if your heater settings were perfect. You’ve got to balance that IR output with a fast quench rate to keep those lines crisp.
