
Why Your Patio Heater Actually Dies (And How We Fix It)
Most people see an “IP55” rating and think, “Great, it won’t break if it rains.” But if you’re running an infrared heater, rain isn’t the real killer. The real enemy is the heat. Think about where the electrical wire enters the heating tube. When those high-wattage elements kick in, that specific spot becomes a furnace. It’s a constant cycle of getting scorching hot and then cooling down. The problem with the cheap stuff If you buy a generic, white-label heater, you’ll usually find a basic rubber gasket or a plastic washer shoved into a hole. It looks fine on day one. But after a few months of that heat soak, that rubber gets brittle. It cracks. Once that seal goes, moisture sneaks in. Then you get carbonization, a short circuit, and a dead heater. It’s a classic failure. How we do it differently We didn’t want to build something that just works for one season. Instead of cheap rubber, we use fluorosilicone and ceramic-fiber gaskets. These things are beasts—they can handle 200°C without losing their bounce. But we don’t stop there. We “pot” the lead-wire using a special epoxy that conducts heat but blocks electricity. It basically creates a rock-solid wall that keeps water out and stops the wires from vibrating loose while you’re installing them. A quick tip for the install Here is the thing: because these seals are so tight, they aren’t as flexible as a loose rubber band. If you pull the wiring too tight during installation, you might actually stress the epoxy. To avoid that, just leave a little bit of a “service loop” (a small slack) in the cable. It keeps the tension off the chassis and ensures the seal stays perfect. Why this actually matters When a seal leaks, oxidation starts eating away at the terminals. That creates resistance, which creates more heat, which destroys the wire insulation even faster. It’s a nasty downward spiral. By getting the sealing right from the start, the heater stays stable. It doesn’t just pass the IP55 test in a factory lab—it actually stays weather-proof for years.
